Trascendecia
El dilema de nuestra existencia. El logro de la trascendencia terrenal es tal vez la búsqueda más recurrente en el ser humano, ya que incluso la conquista de la felicidad o de un propósito parece estar supeditada a ella. La felicidad, por ejemplo, no fue reconocida como algo realmente importante hasta alrededor del siglo XVIII con la llegada de la Ilustración.
La felicidad
Antes de ello, la felicidad era considerada causa de la suerte, el destino o de una vida llena de virtud y posterior a la muerte. Incluso, padecer sufrimiento es visto por algunos cristianos como requisito indispensable para acceder a lo que santo Tomás de Aquino llamó la «felicidad perfecta».
«El Espíritu mismo da testimonio a nuestro espíritu, de que somos hijos de Dios. Y si somos hijos, somos también herederos; herederos de Dios y coherederos con Cristo, si es que padecemos juntamente con él, para que juntamente con él seamos glorificados». Romanos 8:16–17. «Y ustedes fueron llamados para esto. Porque también Cristo sufrió por nosotros, con lo que nos dio un ejemplo para que sigamos sus pasos». 1 Pedro 2:21.

¿Debemos sufrir?
En fin, en la mente de todo ser humano con capacidad de autoconsciencia habita una respuesta que da sentido a su presencia en este mundo. Pero, a partir de alguna de ellas o en su conjunto, ¿podemos afirmar que hemos resuelto ya el problema de nuestra existencia? Si no es así, ¿realmente qué tan importante es resolverlo?

Según Richard Dawkins, prestigiado etólogo y biólogo evolutivo, “la vida inteligente sobre un planeta alcanza su mayoría de edad cuando resuelve el problema de su propia existencia”. Mientras que Alain Fournier afirmaba algo que, a mi parecer, desvela nuestra profunda esencia ignorante y arrogante: «No sabemos hacia dónde vamos, pero vamos».
Sentido de existir
Lo que es una realidad, es que no hemos llegado a un consenso sobre cuál es el sentido de nuestra existencia. Algunos afirman que la felicidad, pero no se ponen de acuerdo en cómo alcanzarla; otros afirman que la trascendencia de este mundo, pero no se ponen de acuerdo en el camino; hay algunos afirman que el dinero, pero no se ponen de acuerdo en el modelo económico. Cada uno tiene mucho interés hacia dónde va, pero a casi nadie le importa realmente hacia dónde vamos.

The Dilemna of Existence
Perhaps, humans seek for transcendence while still alive more than anything else, even finding happiness or achieving a resolution seem to be part of it. However, for instance, the importance of happiness was recognized until 18th Century, during the Age of Enlightenment.
The Happiness
Before that, it was believed that happiness was related to luck, destiny, or living a virtuous life. Even some Christians believed that suffering was a prerequisite to “perfect happiness”, as stated by Thomas Aquinas.
“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory” Romans 8:16–17. “To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps” Peter 2:21.
¿We must suffering?
In every human mind with capacity of self-awareness inhabits an answer that gives meaning to our presence in this world. But can we solve the problem from one of these answers or this set of answers? Alain Fournier said once “we don’t know where we’re going, but we’re going”; to me, this quote reveals our deep ignorant and arrogant human essence.
Today, the truth is that there is no consensus on the actual meaning of our existence. Some people claim that the meaning of our existence is happiness, but they cannot reach an agreement on how to find happiness. Some people say that the meaning of our existence is to transcend this world, but they don’t have the same criteria for the path to transcendence. Other people state that the money, but they disagree in the economic model. Everybody is very interested in the final destination, but, in fact, hardly anyone cares where we’re going.
