Para mí, el Día de los caídos en guerra significa muchísimo, como veterano del ejército de los EE.UU hace veintisiete y medio años.
Como concejal en representación del Quinto Distrito de la Ciudad de Tucson, sigo trabajando en implantar los valores del patriotismo en la juventud para que recuerden a aquellos que han servido a esta nación en el ejército. Trabajo para asegurarme de que la Ciudad trabaje con nuestros grupos de veteranos del ejército, y de hecho, este año tendremos un desfile del Día de los Veteranos, por lo cual me siento muy orgulloso de formar parte del desfile desde antes de la pandemia.
Durante los últimos trece años, en el Día de los caídos en guerra (Memorial Day) y el Día de los Veteranos (Veteran’s Day), un contingente de servidores electos, grupos y organizaciones se me unen para salir al Southern Arizona V.A. Hospital para regalar cartas de agradecimiento o para apoyarlos con tratamientos, a los exmilitares y al personal del hospital por su trabajo. Más de tres docenas de escuelas de todo Tucson y el condado de Pima, así como grupos y organizaciones han brindado voluntariado para agradecer a nuestros exmilitares.
Para recordar a los 396 tucsonenses de la Generación Grandiosa que voluntariamente servió a nuestro país durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y que hizo el último sacrificio. Personalmente, trabajé para asegurarme de que se completara el monumento a la Segunda Guerra Mundial en el Parque Armory (Armory Park).
Esto fue idea de Gilbert Quintanilla, quien había servido a nuestro país y se percató que nuestra comunidad no tenía ningún monumento para los tucsonenses que participaron y murieron en la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Quiero agradecer a mis colegas en el cabildo por su apoyo para que el monumento se volviera una realidad, así como su apoyo y voto para que se realice el desfile del Día los veteranos, así como programas de apoyo para los exmilitares en Tucson.
Gracias a las familias de aquellos que sirvieron a nuestra nación en las fuerzas armadas y a todos aquellos que sirvieron e hicieron el último sacrificio: Dios los bendiga, sepan que no han sido olvidados. He aquí la oración para el Día de los Veteranos.
“Señor, honramos a nuestros veteranos de las fuerzas armadas, mujeres y hombres valiosos que dieron lo mejor de ellos cuando fueron llamados a servir y proteger a nuestro país. Te pedimos que los bendigas, Señor, por su servicio altruista en la lucha constante para preservar nuestras libertades, nuestra seguridad, y la herencia de nuestro país, para todos ellos, envía grandes bendiciones por los momentos difíciles por los que pasaron, por los sacrificios que hicieron y por sus muy variadas contribuciones a la victoria de los Estados Unidos sobre la tiranía y la opresión. Los respetamos, les agradecemos, los honramos, estamos orgullosos de ellos, y pedimos para que guardes a esta gente especial y los bendigas con paz y felicidad. En el nombre de Jesús oramos; amén. Recordémoslos, a todos nuestros veteranos que han sacrificado tanto para mantener a salvo a nuestro país. Dios bendiga a todas nuestras tropas, y las cuide por siempre”.
Ward 5 Update

Memorial Day means a lot to me as a 27 ½ year retired Army veteran.
As your Council Member for Ward 5, I continue my work to instill the values of patriotism in young people and for them to remember those who served this nation in the military. I work to ensure the City works with our Veterans groups and that we will have an in-person, Veteran’s Day Parade this year and I am proud to take part in this parade, prior to the pandemic.
For the past thirteen years, during Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day, a contingent of elected officials, groups and organizations join me in going out to the Southern Arizona V.A. Hospital to present thank you cards to veterans at the hospital or getting treatment and the VA hospital staff for their work. More than three dozen schools across Tucson and Pima County, as well as groups and organizations, have volunteered to make thank you cards for our veterans.
To remember the 396 Tucsonans of the Greatest Generation, who volunteered to serve our country during World War II and made the ultimate sacrifice, I worked to ensure the completion of the World War II Memorial that is in Armory Park.
This was the idea of the late Gilbert Quintanilla, who had served our country and saw our community had no memorial to those Tucsonans who served and died in World War II.
I want to thank my colleagues on the Council for their support and vote to move the Memorial, as well as their support and votes for the City’s Veterans Parade and for programs the city offers to help veterans in Tucson.
Thank you to the families of those who served our nation in the military. To all those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice, God bless you and you are not forgotten and here is the Veteran’s Prayer:
“Dear Lord, we honor our veterans, worthy women and men who gave their best when they were called upon to serve and protect their country. We pray that you will bless them, Lord, for their unselfish service in the continual struggle to preserve our freedoms, our safety, and our country’s heritage, for all of us. Bless them abundantly for the hardships they faced, for the sacrifices they made for their many different contributions to America’s victories over tyranny and oppression. We respect them, we thank them, we honor them, we are proud of them, and we pray that you will watch over these special people and bless them with peace and happiness. In Jesus’ name we pray; Amen. Let us remember all of the veterans that sacrificed so much to keep our country safe. God bless all of our troops and may He watch over them forever.”
