Dominic Ortega: el filántropo de Tucson
Mi vida ha estado bendecida. He sido tan afortunado a lo largo de los últimos sesenta y seis años que me siento obligado a ayudar a otros. Hace nueve años, me retiré de una empresa que acumuló el valor de $35 mil millones entre las 100 compañías de los EE.UU. con más ganancias. Mi especialidad como consultor de alto rango eran las ventas, la motivación, y el mercadeo (marketing). Mi éxito se basó en propiciar negocios que resultaran beneficiosos para todas las partes involucradas: situaciones de “ganar-ganar”. Siempre me esforcé por superar las expectativas, al encontrar soluciones y no solo identificar problemas. Desarrollé una reputación: una carta de presentación positiva y llena de energía.
Fuertes lazos
Aproximadamente siete años antes de retirarme, empecé a desarrollar fuertes lazos con el mundo de las organizaciones sin fines de lucro y decidí que emplearía mis a habilidades en mercadeo (marketing) y comunicación para ayudar a que estas organizaciones contaran sus historias. Desde entonces, he colaborado con docenas de juntas o consejos de diversas organizaciones o asociaciones en nuestra comunidad.
El desarrollo de habilidades, como el manejo de tiempo fue esencial para lograr el éxito. Llevaba un registro diario, semanal y anual de mis objetivos, tanto en el ámbito profesional como en el ámbito familiar y entres esas cosas, me fasciné al leer libros de reconocidos conferencistas motivacionales.
Desarrollo y guía
Con el fin desarrollar y guiar a jóvenes me conecté con la Universidad de Arizona, mi alma mater. Donde ayudé al club de la universidad: El club había organizado una cena para recabar fondos, entre $25,000 y $30,000 dólares y habían alcanzado un número de graduados nada despreciable, pero no muchos conocían la historia del club. Así que me encontré con una persona que posteriormente se convirtió en un buen amigo: Humberto López. Él se tomó el tiempo y charló conmigo. Así fue como él decidió apoyar al club. Esa noche se alcanzó la suma récord de $325,000 dólares. Esto es un ejemplo de la influencia positiva al contar historias exitosas.
Si en todo lo que haces, contribuyes con energía e ideas positivas, así como con el poder de tu imaginación, no habrá nada que te detenga. Así es como me contacté con 30-40-50 organizaciones sin fines de lucro. Les dije que entre mejor supiera su historia, mejor podría tener la misma visión y así encontrar personas con objetivos similares que apoyaran su causa.
Tratar con Dignidad y Respeto
Siempre tratas a todas las personas con dignidad y respeto, sin importar su posición, porque es lo correcto. Si tu construyes una marca de integridad, siempre podrás dormir tranquilo.
Fui a 121 eventos en 2019. Compartí mi tiempo, mis tesoros o mis talentos. En ese mismo año, me nombraron el Filántropo del año en Tucson y para 2020, recaudamos la suma de $440,000 de dólares para un centro de salud comunitaria, en una noche, al final para el proyecto fueron $1,000,000 de dolares.
Women who Soar Award (Mujeres que despegan)
En 2021, fui honrado con el premio Women who Soar Award (Mujeres que despegan) y estoy muy orgulloso de ello. Soy el único hombre que ha recibido este premio en reconocimiento de mi apoyo, defensa y orientación para las mujeres. En 2022, la Cámara Hispana de Comercio de Tucson me otorgó el reconocimiento conocido como La estrella, por mi labor y compromiso con la comunidad hispana. Doy orientación a aproximadamente entre 10 y 12 jóvenes de la comunidad, algunos necesitan más guía que otros. Es muy gratificante ver su éxito. Me encanta recibir mensajes de texto para darme las “gracias”. Desde hacer entrevistas en el Colegio Eller de la Universidad de Arizona, hasta dar recorridos por el campus. Todo es cuestión de trabajo altruista.
Que he aprendido en la vida
Si la vida me ha enseñado algo, es la importancia de las relaciones y la comunicación. Estoy muy agradecido con la gente con la que he topado en esta vida: Mi esposa Myriam; mi hermano mayor David, alcalde de Scottsdale; Humberto López por su apoyo permanente; Howard Stewart, mi mejor amigo y mi mentor; y Gulshan y Neelam Sethi, quienes siempre me han guiado como familia con el mejor de los ejemplos de inigualable generosidad y bondad.

Dominic Ortega: Tucson philanthropist
My life has been blessed. I have been so fortunate in the course of these 66 years that I feel obligated to help others. I retired 9 years ago from a $35 billion Fortune 100 company. My specialty as a Senior Consultant was Sales, Motivation and Marketing. My success was related to creating positive win-win situations, as I always strived to exceed expectations and having solutions and not just identifying problems. Eventually, I developed a reputation: a positive and energized presentation.
Strong ties
About 7 years before retiring, I started to develop strong ties to the non-profit world and I decided I would use my communication and marketing skills to help these non-profits tell their story. Since then, I have served on a dozen boards in the community.
Developing Time Management skills were essential to my success. I would write down daily, weekly and yearly goals. I set them for work as well as with my Family. I loved readings from well-known motivational speakers.
Develop and mentor young people
To continue with my vision, I decided to develop and mentor young people, so I connected with the University of Arizona, my alma mater. By the time I got involved with the University Cub, they would host a scholarship dinner that would raise for $25,000 to $35,000. They had a phenomenal graduation success rate, but not many knew the club’s story. I met with an Individual who would become a good friend, Humberto Lopez. He interviewed me and agreed to support the organization and that night the dinner raised a record $325,000. This is one example of the impact of sharing a great story.
If you can bring energy, ideas and your imagination to all you do, you can be unstoppable. From that point on, I connected to 30-40-50 non-profits. I told them the more I know of your story, the more I can share your Vision and find like-minded individuals who will support your cause. Part of my Brand was my photos: They tell a story about nonprofits and their Mission.
Dignity and respect
If you treat everyone with dignity and respect as I do, regardless of their position, because it is the right thing to do, you’re building a brand of integrity. This way, you will always sleep well at night.
I went to 121 events in 2019, sharing Time, Treasure or Talent with them. In 2019, I was named the Philanthropist of the Year here in Tucson. In 2020, we raised $440,000 in one night for a Community Health Center. When all said and done the total for the project was just under $1,000,000.
Women who Soar Award
In 2021, I received an honor, it is called Women who Soar Award. I am very proud of. I am the only man to receive this award in acknowledgement of my support, advocacy and mentoring of Women. In 2022, I was presented with the La Estrella Award by the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for my Community involvement. I mentor about 10-12 young people in the Community, some need a little guidance, some a lot. It’s very rewarding to see their success. I love getting a text saying “thank you” with their successes. From Eller interviews to giving tours of the University, it is a labor of love.
Life has taught me anything
Life has taught me anything, it is the importance of relationships and communication. I’m so thankful for the people in my life. My wife Myriam, my big brother David, Mayor of Scottsdale, Humberto Lopez for always supporting me, Howard Stewart, best friend and mentor, and Gulshan and Neelam Sethi who always guided me as Family with the best example of generosity and Kindness that one could ever know.
We are a community and my success is their success! Yes, I have even been known to do a handstand to raise money for a good cause!
